Got fired today despite having DACA
 

I have been at this job for over a year now, and I loved it.

I had a meeting with my manager and Human resource manager today, and they told me they would not be able to renew my contract because even though I can legally work, I don't have lawful permanent status, and so it goes against their strict security policies due to the field it is in.

DACA is uncharted territory for most, especially employers. In fact, i bet most employers don't even know what DACA is.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Did it come up all of a sudden, or did your employer know about your DACA status when you first got hired?

Maybe they just wanted to get rid of you and they told you that....

CONTRACT

if its a contract, they can fire you for ANY reason whatsoever

They didn't know I was under DACA. The human resource manager emailed me a week ago to inquiry about my employment card since it expires in April or March, and so she wanted to know what happens to me after it expired. I told her that I have sent in an application for renewal.

She then asked me if I was here under a student visa, I was hesitant to tell her that I was under DACA, but I did anyway in case they decided to look more into it, and so, if they did, I didn't want them to think I was lying.


They told me they want me back if I ever get legal residence, and they offered me letters of recommendation. At least I have that.

I guess I wasn't fired per se, more like laid off as they are letting me to continue working there until the end of this month.
