Health Coverage Tax Exemption Question

Hello,
Back in bebruary I spoke to a lady at a health coverage place about getting health coverage but she mentioned that because we under DACA are only technically TEMPORARILY LEGAL and not citizens or permanent residents, that the new Health Coverage Tax law didn't apply to us.
I was wondering if anyone here had any more information about this that they could share.
Thank You.

BTW, I had health insurance for most of the year but I wanted to check and see if I should go about it differently.

Re: Health Coverage Tax Exemption Question

When you're filing you're taxes it will let you know that daca is exempt from the penalty if that's what you were asking

Re: Health Coverage Tax Exemption Question

When you are filing your taxes you will come across the health care law. If you had coverage for 9 months out of 12, then you don't need to worry. If not, then you'll need to apply for the exemption; form 8965 and apply for the exemption that you qualify for.

Re: Health Coverage Tax Exemption Question

I think my whole taxes for 2014 is a disaster. This is the last time I let my parent's 'accountant' do it for me. I had a similar question but Malignon answered.

Apparently the accountant seems unaware or something that we are exempt because I was told I owe $126 as the lack of health care penalty. Now I have to amend my taxes (with a week left!) and try to fix this mess on my own.

Anyone else in the same situation?

Re: Health Coverage Tax Exemption Question

If you have DACA you should NOT have to pay the penalty for the Affordable Care Act you are 100% exempt since you are "Certain Non Citizen" and your exemption code is a "C".
If you need to amend the original return this can be done even after April 15th, the deadline to amend 2014 tax returns would be 3 years from the original file date if you expect to get an additional refund.

If you have further questions reach out to me. :)

P.S. I'm a Tax Pro at H&R Block.
