Well, I know somebody that just got the initial approval in just a little more than five months too, but I think the issue is that for the renewals there are people who are not getting the renewal even if they submit on time. It could be, though, that some of these "late" renewal/approvals are happening because some people are waiting to submit the application until later than they should.
I also think that the initial applications should be going through on time because one would expect at this point that the volume is significantly less than the first wave of Dreamers who are renewing right now because they applied in 2012 and 2013. What they really need to do is develop a rubber stamp process of sorts for renewals, where you get a renewal almost automatically if your application was initially approved and you had committed no crimes after that approval. But then again that makes too much sense and of course immigration law in this country seems designed only to make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
