brokered convention could happen people
you read it here first, that's right brokered convention could happen.
brokered convention: Before the era of presidential primaries, conventions were routinely brokered. Adlai Stevenson in 1952 for the Democratic Party and Thomas Dewey in 1948 for the Republican Party were the last two candidates selected through a brokered convention. So during the convention, people who were not even in the race could actually win the nomination, I say Dick Durbin, that's right, he's got a shot. |
Re: brokered convention could happen people
Durbin would be good, but the mumblings are that if a brokered convention happened, look for Al Gore to be a likely nominee.

Re: brokered convention could happen people
You guys do realize that a brokered convention will award delegates to the two leading candidates. The DNC just won't pick someone out of the blue and give them the nomination.
Also, y'all are confusing the meaning of a brokered convention. A brokered convention in contemporary times means that two candidates are deadlocked in the number of pledged delegates and thus have to gain endorsements from the superdelegates at the National Convention. It doesn't mean a bunch of people sitting around smoking cigars, and backroom deals like the one Adlai Stevenson used to win the nomination in '52. |
Re: brokered convention could happen people
True, a brokered convention, should it occur, will likely pick either Clinton or Obama. To do otherwise, to pick some one out of the blue, would not sit well with many people. However, I have read the possibility of Al Gore being picked in a brokered convention should a deadlock be reached and it appears that the Democrats are too splintered. The thinking is that he would make a good consensus candidate, though in all reality I would be surprised for this to ever happen.

The DNC can't just say to the two candidates, "Ok you guys campaigned hard and spent a lot of money but now we're going to nullify the delegates that you've won". Both candidates would sue the DNC and create a massive scandal that would fracture the party and likely usher in a Republican as the next President. Legally speaking, a brokered convention will be a battle for the super delegates. The pledged delegates that both candidates have won cannot be nullifed barring any criminal or treasonous act on the part of the candidate and/or the delegates. Additionally, Howard Dean, the chairman of the DNC has repeatedly warned against a brokered convention. If Obama and Clinton are tied, both candidates will seek the influence of Howard Dean who can command a majority of the senior superdelegates. |
Re: brokered convention could happen people
The other factor that may come in to play is Michigan/Florida. Should things come close by convention, it is expected that Clinton will push to restore delegates to those states.
