Will Trump Breathe New Life Into Immigration Legislation?

Dreamer Green Cards?

Krikorian, whose organization supports lower immigration levels, said it’s “preferable” for Congress to package dreamer green cards with the elimination of green cards in other areas, particularly the diversity visa lottery and visas for the siblings of U.S. citizens. Granting permanent legal status to dreamers is “an appropriate act of mercy” on behalf of this group, considering their circumstances, he said. But it shouldn’t provide an avenue for even more immigration based on that act, he said.

If Trump does terminate DACA, Congress is likely to act, and quickly, Krikorian said. But “allowing the thing to run on autopilot takes away the urgency, especially for the Democrats, to do anything about it,” he said.

Republicans’ prior position on DACA also indicates a willingness to enact legislation addressing the population’s immigration status, Greg Siskind, a founding partner at the immigration law firm Siskind Susser PC in Memphis, Tenn., told Bloomberg BNA Jan. 26. Republicans’ "beef” with the program wasn’t the concept of providing relief but that it was done via executive action instead of legislation, he said.

Getting “a congressional blessing on the program” eliminates any separation-of-powers issues, he said.

I could see getting rid of the diversity visa lottery, but the elimination of the sibling category would probably not be acceptable to democrats voting on this. Still, if even someone like Krikorian is willing to accept a deal that gets us green cards in exchange for concessions elsewhere, then we might still have a shot.

This is great (for us DACAers) ... until you realize that Democrats will trip out and vote against it. That then puts us back into the same shithole of a situation we've been enjoying since the original DREAM act was drafted.

Green cards for DACA and give GOP, Trump whatever they want.

There is no way many democrats vote for something like this unless there is a path for other immigrants.

Always a possibility. But if dems vote against something like this then they might get primaried. The difference is that in the pre-DACA days no one was dependant on the DREAMAct. Nowadays people's careers and lives depend solely on DACA. It's not like before when the DREAMAct failed to pass, we did not gain anything, but we were no worse off than before the DREAMAct vote. This time around people will lose careers, homes, families will be torn apart. So while I share your concern over democratic opposition, I feel there will be enough of them to go along with something like what the article proposes.

We only need a handful. And if DACA is canceled then there will be an urgent humanitarian crisis that neither party will want to own long term. Can you imagine democrats taking the blame for not passing legislation that would protect DREAMers if DACA is terminated? Republicans will be able to say that they have laid out a solution to the DREAMers and that it's the democrats holding it up. I just don't see enough democrats holding out to stop something like this from going through.

There are some republicans that favor comprehensive reform only too. It's really complicated... but I hope we prevail.

The only immigration reform Trump will pursue is an enforcement only immigration reform.

I mean, he already enacted a muslim ban and is about to enact a muslim registry, so I don't understand how you can hope for the best.

Do you have any other option at this point?
