California moves closer to becoming sanctuary state

A bill that would make California a sanctuary state from border to border crossed another hurdle Tuesday.

Democrats in the state's Senate Public Safety Committee approved the measure with a 5 to 2 party-line vote after President Trump signed an order last week threatening to withdraw federal money from sanctuary cities.

The new bill would restrict police and local agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities without a court order.

The legislation also seeks to create "safe zones" throughout the state by prohibiting immigration enforcement at public schools, hospitals and courthouses.

"It is incumbent on us to put the proper policies in place so that police and other local agencies can focus on their chief responsibility, protecting Californians, not acting as federal immigration agents," Senate President pro Tempore Kevin de León, the bill's author, said Tuesday.

"Let me be very clear, this measure does not impede the enforcement of federal immigration law. It simply restricts the commandeering of our resources and tax dollars to do the job of the federal government," he said.

California already has several sanctuary cities, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. But other big population centers such as San Jose do not have policies restricting police from alerting ICE to the arrest of an undocumented immigrant.

Wouldn't it be an easier target if trump goes all out?

While California is doing something good, I don't understand why they would try to protect people who have commited crimes from ICE. If someone is undocumented AND they committed a violent crime, they should be handed to ICE for deportation.

This is exactly what I've been trying to tell people here. Trump said heis going after criminals only. Why do we need sanctuary cities? The reason we need them is because we are not certain what trump will do with us.

Once trump take care of us in a good way, sanctuary cities can disappear.

That's not what it means to be a Sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities can and do hand over people who commit serious crimes. In a Sanctuary city, as an undocumented immigrant, you don't have to worry that any interaction with the police will automatically put you in deportation proceedings.

We need "sanctuary cities" because Trump will cast a wide net that innocent people will be trapped in just like with last weeks immigration EO.
Cities do hand over immigrants with violent offenses, they don't let everyone go.
Plus, there is no clear definition for "sanctuary city" each city had their own rules and procedures.
