This is my home...our home
Hello,
It definitely helps to know that there are millions of people out there like me who are in this unfortunate situation which is no fault of our own. I came to this country when I was 13 and have been through high school, university and will be attending medical school later this year- all of which I attended here in the U.S. My family came here legally on my dad's work permit and as a result of the backlog, the permament residency process was delayed and I aged out. I will be the only one in the family without a green card as I have no other option right now. I have appreciated everything this country has done for me and I have worked my hardest to give back to this land of opportunities. Until I remain in school, I will be able to stay here legally on a student visa. But I worry everyday about what will happen after- a thought that has been responsible for insurmountable stress in my life. It's just not fair. I pray everyday that the rest of the country realizes our dilemma and the senate reconsiders their position on the DREAM ACT. |

Hey there, welcome to DAP!
Congratulations on going to med school! I think that you are fortunate enough to still be in status and have that student visa. Once you finish medical school, I think you'd have the chance at being sponsored in the field of medicine and what not. Have you considered that? |
Re: This is my home...our home
Welcome! You should consider yourself lucky for being able to attend medical school. I'm sure you already know this but when you graduate you should look for some type of H visa for your residency NOT a J visa because you have to go back for a few years after they expire for those. We're hoping DREAM passes in 2009 but their is some confusion about what to do with DREAMers who remain in status at the time of bill passage. I'm fairly confident they fall under the act but some other people think the wording last time around was misleading. Anyways, it's not a controversial change and something we as DAP should make sure is fixed by Senator Durbin so we don't leave any DREAMers such as yourself behind.
Maybe that should be our goal this week, to write to Durbin to make sure DREAMers still in status don't get the shaft by USCIS because of some ambiguous wording in the bill. Next time if someone goes to Washington take longhorn3 with you. Want to help us with this longhorn? |

Re: This is my home...our home
Thanks everyone for the support. I do consider myself fortunate to get into medical though I must tell you, it was quite a struggle. I'm sure as you guys know..applying as an international student was no easy feat. I did not get in the first year I applied, but I didn't give up. I was heart broken no doubt because I knew the only thing setting me back was my status. But I believed in myself and things worked out this year. So those in a situation such as mine...DO NOT LOSE HOPE. JUST REMAIN POSITIVE..positive thinking helps the most!
I am up for writing to senator Durbin and asking him to make sure they include people who are in status and just modify the wordings, so there are no misunderstandings later on. How do you want to do this? Should we all send out individual letters? e-mails? both? I am just going to continue thinking positive that everything is going to work out fine--just as soon as people realize that WE are an ASSET to this country. We've worked hard our entire lives..studied hard..and will continue contributing to this wonderful country of ours. |

Here is where you can contact him. Plus, if you ever get to meet him person which many DREAMers have, make sure to bring this up. When DREAM passes, let's not leave anyone behind. |
