I personally would never want to move to Europe. I have family that goes there for work (for months at a time) and they hate it. Some people there are anti-American and kind of racist, so if you're an American minority you've got 2 things against you. The only place I could imagine living in that isn't the US is Canada. Only because it's like 51st state and the proximity to my family and friends here in the states that could come visit me when I get lonely. |
Re: Who wants to join the Foreign Legion w/ me?
yeah but kind of sentiment rarely gets into government there...
there are a few exceptions like that Geert guy but politically I think Europe is a lot more moderate...mainly, in my opinion, that religion plays a very small role... |
Re: Who wants to join the Foreign Legion w/ me?
If you really, really, really want to, then do it. But I think sitting tight and pressing for change in the USA is a better option.
The French Foreign Legion is an elite force in the French military, composed almost entirely of foreigners. That much I know with 100% accuracy. I obviously am not a Legionnaire, nor would I ever become one. I have watched a couple documentaries and read a bit about them, and if you think certain American boot camps are tough, wait until you see the Legion's boot camp. Unlike in the US military, corporal punishment is allowed in the Legion. Also, if you don't know the French language, be prepared to have it drilled into you. Finally, and several Legionnaires have said this, to the French government the Legion is very expendable, as it is not composed of Frenchmen (though some Frenchmen manage to join, even though they are not supposed to, by renouncing their citizenship and then enlisting). Also, you have to travel to France in order to be selected. Not many people make it into the Legion, and if you are rejected you are given no assistance in getting back to your home country. I don't mean to be mean or crush your dreams, but I think you should know this stuff. Here's a link to find out more about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Foreign_Legion PS There is also a Spanish Foreign Legion that exists, but I don't know nearly as much about it as I do of the FFF. I do know that, unlike the FFF, you have to be a native speaker (of Spanish) to join, but I don't think it matters what country you are from. Here's another wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_foreign_legion PPS I know more than the average person about the FFF because my mom is French, and I happened to be quasi-seriously looking into it myself at one point. |

oh yeah, I know how hard it is...only 1 out of 8 are selected into boot camp and if you're ever injured you'll probably be kicked out. 40Kilometer marches are regular stuff there...but Im really thinking about training for it and trying out for it in the next 2-3 years |
Re: Who wants to join the Foreign Legion w/ me?
Elite forces in any military unit always have very tough recruitment and enlistment standards. Isn't it ironic that the elite forces of the French military are composed entirely of foreigners? Speaks very poorly about French military capability but we already knew that considering we saved their ass twice from the same country.
