Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
WASHINGTON (AP) - The chairman of a House committee that is usually the first stop for immigration bills says he doubts Congress will ever pass sweeping immigration reform.
Democratic Rep. John Conyers said Wednesday that lawmakers should work on pieces of the immigration issue such as providing enough workers for businesses. He says he'll be a dedicated student of whoever accomplishes comprehensive immigration reform. His statement came at a hearing filled with business people wanting more H2B visas for seasonal workers such as seafood processors. http://www.kxxv.com/global/story.asp?s=8176939 Dream plus workers for businesses IMO.:-o |

Go Dream.
Boo CIR (not until Dream) Barack Obama 2008 |
Re: Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
Imo,that is basically the death knell for any comprehensive bill.Conyers has been in the House for quite a few years & I don't think he would misquote on something as important as immigration. At a Piecemeal pace appears to be the name of the game for the coming Congress(s) until the immigration issue in general has stabilized enough politically for the general public & special interest groups, hence why it might be a good idea for any Dreamer to continue to seek out their own form of legalization.

Re: Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
Dream plus H1B are immidately problems that we have to solve.. then after pass that, try to pass CIR

Re: Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
This is just speculation. They have to solve this problem sooner or later... The status quo is just simply unacceptable. I'd rather have a Tancredo-immigration reform than nothing because then, I'll know what to do with my life.
Dream should pass though. It was close in 07 so no doubt it will be even closer in 09 with Obama or Hillary. |
Re: Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
was he talking for this year or over the future?

Re: Democrat doubts chances for immigration reform
I respect Democratic Rep. John Conyers, but how can he predict the make-up of the senate after the fall elections; if enough Democrats gain more seats CIR will garner more support that is depending on how liberal or conservative the newly democratic senators are toward a pathway to legalization. The emotions on immigration will not go away, not one year or ten years from now, we will strongly advocate for a pathway to citizenship and the opposition will strongly advocate their perspective on immigration. The new President will have to work with 111th senate, I hope the new senate has the political will to pass CIR, and as much as I want dream to pass we must also think about our relatives.
