Can We Change Our Names?

Can we change our names through the court system? Or do you need a GC or Citizenship?

Has anyone done that before? What's the process?

An individual is able to change their name after they're granted citizenship. My buddy filled out some paperwork after his swearing in oath.

Aren't you able to chnage your name when you first get your social? When I got mine I officially dropped my second last name

I’m almost 100% that you can change it when you become a citizen.

Re: Can We Change Our Names?

I changed my first name through a court order (in New York) before I even had DACA (in 2012). I then used that court order to submit my initial DACA application with a first name that's completely different than the one in my passport. Since I got DACA then, I haven't had any issues with USCIS and daca renewals, and even AOS

There's national legal precedent that non-citizens and even undocumented residents can legally change their names through the courts, but how easy it will be for you ultimately depends on the State and County where you live. When I went through the process the Judge initially wanted to reject it because of my lack of legal status, but luckily I had a good attorney that pushed back (through a non-profit) and the Judge had to approve it. Feel free to message me if you have questions

When I first got approved for DACA and applied for my SSN, in the line that asks for my name or other used names I wrote my name with only my first last name. I left the other used names line blank. All my documents come out with only one last name since then.

You can do it via the courts.

You can also legally change your name while naturalizing for no additional charge.
