Negative Calorie Foods

I first heard about this back in high school from my math teacher. He said that there are foods that require more calories to digest than the calories the food contains.

For example:
Quote:

  1. A piece of dessert consisting of 400 Calories (actually 400 kilocalories) may only require 150 Calorie (actually 150 kilocalories) to digest by our body, resulting in a net gain of 250 calories which is added to our body fat.
  2. On the other hand, a 5 calorie piece of celery may require 150 calorie to digest, but resulting in a net loss of 145 calories from our body fat. It implies that the more you eat, the more you lose weight.

The best way I saw it described from the research I did was from THIS website.

It contains this list of so called negative calorie foods:

Negative Calorie Vegetables
  • Asparagus
  • Beet Root
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrot
  • Cauliflower
  • CeleryChicory
  • Hot Chili
  • Cucumber
  • Garden cress
  • Garlic
  • Green Beans
  • Lettuce
  • Onion
  • Radish
  • Spinach
  • Turnip
  • Zucchini
Negative Calorie Fruits
  • Apple
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cranberry
  • Grapefruit Honeydew
  • Lemon/Lime
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Papaya
  • PeachPineapple
  • Raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Tomato
  • Tangerine
  • Turnip
  • Watermelon
Has anyone had any experience with this? You know what they say about things that seem too good to be true.

I took intro to nutrition for my nursing prerequisite requirement. No they are not true, especially the fruit part, they all have calories. One of the few really negative calorie food is celery, since it is high in fiber and requires more digestion but it's not significant amount. You can't just eat a pound of it and lose weight, it's very small. But the vegetables are so low in calories that you don't have to worry about it when you eat them. Only real way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise. Just run.

As long as you consistently work out, and are on a strict plan, then negative calorie foods should not effect you that much, i mean seriously how much lbs. are you going to gain, if you eat an orange? everyone is so worked up about carbs, as well, and not eating food with a high amount, well if you burn it by exercising, then we wouldn't have to "count your carbs". all this extracirricular dieting, just shows, that america is lazy. and we want to lose weight, by not working out. i just say, stay fit, go outside, play sports, i mean look at the football players they eat a lot of carbs (pasta, bread) and protein before games. and they burn all that. after it.

That's funny, I was watching Food Detectives on the Food Network last night (shush) and they said that celery can be considered a negative calorie food. Celery only contains 8 calories, and you burn 5 calories by chewing, that plus the calories is takes to digest it is what makes it a negative calorie food. Or something like that.

But anyway, it's not enough to make a difference. Unless all you eat is celery, but that wouldn't be healthy.

I don't believe in negative calories because the diffrence is insignificant. Have any of you tried the keto diet? The only problem with it is that your carbs have to be 100% clean.

I don't see how someone can gain fat if they just eat those things on that list. Instead of eating a pound of celery after that chocolate cake just skip the chocolate cake and be fine.

I'll admit that I know next to nothing about nutrition but people have been eating normal things for millions of years and sustained fairly normal body weight. If you're not physically active and then reflect on what you actually eat there is so much trash in our diets it's incredible.
