Risking everything to become a doctor

Quote:

Nearly 200 undocumented students and residents are currently training in U.S. medical schools and teaching hospitals. The outcome of the Supreme Court case on DACA, which commences in November, could determine whether they’ll be able to continue.

Love seeing stories like this, against all odds they are getting it done.

You mean June 2020.... because the whole November 2019 is all talk.

How do they pay for med school? Can anyone point me towards some resources?

A few schools offer aid in return for a commitment of service to their local community. Loyola Stritch does this. I'm currently applying, whatever aid I don't get I'm going to supplement with private loans.

FYI, my friend at Stritch tells me they don't do that any more.

In any case, most medical schools consider DACA candidates without prejudice (it's a bonus point, if anything). And DACA students can and have been accepted to residencies.

So, it's all up to you and your scores/grades/CV if you want to go this route. Fair warning: it's a tough, TOUGH road ahead, even if you weren't a DACA student.

As for funding, most nonfederal student loan sources accept DACA student's loan request now. Nothing's a more sure bet than lending $$ to future doctors...

Thanks for the info. As far as I know they haven't completely stopped that program, at least that's what their office told me a few months ago. My grades and MCAT are average for MD schools, and being a minority helps haha. And yeah I know it's going to be tough, but I can't see myself doing anything else.

Well, if you're crazy enough to choose medicine as an undocumented student, you're crazy enough to survive this route (I should know :D). If you have any questions about the process, or just anything med school related, feel free to shoot me a message.
