Will getting a LPR pension affect citizenship
 

Next year will make it 5 years since my mother got her green card (I've been stuck in I-130 hell ever since. Automated update from uscis says applications are taking longer to process than usual). Anyway she never stopped receiving her pension from her home country and she was told she would have to stop taking it before she applies for her citizenship. Is this true because she's 72 and I don't see how her pension is relevant to her application.

Is your mother on SSI in US? Because if she receives SSI than its not allowed to receive pension from other country without disclosing it.

If not and your mother earned her pension in Mexico, than she is allowed to receive it while living in US. It should not cause any problems on her application for citizenship.

Still contact couple lawyers just to be sure.

We're not from Mexico - the Caribbean. She's not receiving SSI. She came here 4+ years ago so she's not eligible for that. She's about to apply for citizenship and a friend said she needed to stop which didn't make sense to me. She's dependant on her pension because she has no other source of income and we got concerned. She's about to recertify for her pension in her come country.

I'm pretty sure that she is fine than. Nothing to worry about.

Does your mother's country of citizenship allow dual citizenship? If not then she might lose the pension benefits if she becomes a US citizen. Though that would depend on the rules to receive it. Other than maybe having to pay taxes on the pension once she is a US Citizen, I don't think there will be any issues for the application.
