High School Students and Immigration Reform
So in my English class today, we had a lot of free time.
I decided to spend it discussing the politics with three friends, K, J, and C. I really don't know why I did this, but I was just very curious about what they had to say on the subject. I had to make sure that I didn't give away the hint of being an immigrant myself. I proceeded to tell them about AB-540 and about the suit that's being brought against it. I began to ask what they thought about it, and K basically said that if two students [one illegal and one a U.S. citizen] have the same qualifications and are applying to the same school, then the school should give preference to the citizen. But he made sure to say that citizenship status should be the last thing that a school should look at when discussing admissions. Makes sense. C also agreed with what he said. But what I didn't like was how K kept referring to the immigrants as Mexicans. "If the Mexican student this..if the Mexicans were like that..." This misinformation kinda makes the immigration reform issue more...one-sided [for lack of better terms]. A lot of people at my school tend to think that immigration reform will only be for Mexicans and the rest of the Hispanic community. Just because they make up the majority of illegal immigrants does not mean that they are the only race involved. Asians are there, too, you know? So I guess high school students may support the DREAM ACT, too. When I have free time again tomorrow, I'll ask them about DREAM, I didn't have time today. Thoughts? |
Re: High School Students and Immigration Reform
I should have done that while I was in school.
