If they cashed your checked, that means that the forms were filled out correctly, as in no missing fields or signatures. They will start processing it, and you will receive a formal acceptance...

Technically the passport is not valid once it has expired, you will need a valid unexperied passport. Do you have another identification card such as Consulate/Matricula card that is not expired?
