^Hmm...actually, you could say it's a little of both. I had to read The Belief in God and Immortality: A Psychological, Anthropological and Statistical Study, by J.H. Leuba for an anthropology paper this year and the idea is spoken about which got me to research it a little more. I was actually trying to find some links to place here but a lot of it is from nontheist organizations, and I really don't want to go there since there would obviously be quite a bit of bias in those sources.

And it seems by your statement that you have a little bit of resentment towards the Catholic Church. And I like how you mentioned "the true gospel". There's no such thing as "the truth": an evolutionist can say that the evolutionary theory is "the truth" and fundamentalist Christians can also say Genesis holds "the truth" to the creation of the world. Muslims, Jews, Ba'hai members, Hindus, and Buddhists (just to name a few) can also believe their world views as "true". I think that the arrogance of saying something like that is the reason why there is such animosity in the world today towards Christians.

And to revert back to a previous comment you made, prodigal sons/daughters don't always come back. Just a thought .
