Helms said that while it is difficult and probably unfair to label Newman politically, "I think that you could probably look at people like (moderate Republican Sens.) Arlen Specter or Dick Lugar.
"If you took (Republican Sens.) Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe and (Democrat) Jeanne Shaheen and Bonnie, probably among the four of them, there are not going to be a heck of a lot of issues that they are not voting the same way on," Helms said.
It remains to be seen, however, how she may come down on the specific issues of the day -- stimulus packages and bailouts, Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and Social Security, the federal role in education, free trade, national security and privacy rights, and enhanced interrogation, to name a few.

Lew Feldstein, chairman of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, wondered whether the fact that Newman, a former foundation board member, is replacing Gregg "will allow the moderate side of her to operate. Or will she feel more needing to adhere closely to the position of the Republican Party?
"I can imagine certain situations in which her views are more liberal and moderate than the party," Feldstein said, "and I don't know if she will feel constrained."
