Well, I don't know how long ago that conversation took place, but that is clearly not the case anymore.

Just look at health care reform for proof. Max Baucus and his almighty "gang of six" —which sounds more like the very first porn I watched as a young lad— enjoyed tea and crumpets for 6 months all in the spirit of bipartisanship. The result: nothing.

Now to your second point. It will be a very long time for Republicans to be in the majority again (or to control the judiciary committee which is really what matters). Despite the paranoid claims of news commentators in the 24hr-cable-news-cycle era, Republicans have a long way to go before they're able to collect themselves and get back on the horse. As you know, the numbers are simply not there.

So sure, if in 20-30 years the Dream Act hasn't passed, and Republicans are back in power, then we might need "bipartisanship", but I think we should cross that bridge when we come to it.
