I hardly ever use facebook for the same reason. I feel dumb letting other people's lives upset me so much. It's hard to to remember that most people don't have the privilege to go to law/med school, have a prestigious job in their 20s, go on fancy vacations abroad, etc., when you see on facebook that many people you went to school with have these things. (I'm not even going to talk about how people's facebook photo albums make me feel about my social life). Since I've stopped checking up on successful friends and acquaintances online, I've been spending less time feeling inferior and more time appreciating what I have.

I hate feeling like life's a competition, and your career defines you. I don't want to take solace in the fact that my more privileged friends will be in lots of debt, end up unhappy in their careers, etc... but yeah sometimes I think about that stuff.

We can't help it. We've been conditioned to think that way. From education to employment, our lives are one giant competition. And I haven't logged into Facebook and looked at what other people are up to in at least six months because of this reason. Despite my situation, I still feel like I should have gone further than the next kid. And, like you, I'm tired of feeling like inferior to other people over a simple piece of paper.

And I don't know where all of this talk of lowering the age came from, either. Didn't they lower the age from 35 to 30? I guess what some people are afraid of is the possibility that they'll lower it again.
