PHOENIX - A group of Valley students held a 'boot camp' outside the offices of Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday to bring attention to the plight of an undocumented student trying to become a U.S. Marine.
According to a news release from Arizona DREAM Act Coalition , 21-year-old Michael Nazario was given a brief opportunity Friday to deliver his message to the senator, letting him know he was a DREAM military candidate and asking if he would allow Nazario to "be a soldier" by voting for the legislation.
The DREAM Act is a bipartisan piece of legislation that would allow for undocumented youth who were brought to the U.S. at an early age to fix their legal status by completing at least two years in the military or two years of college toward at a bachelor's degree or higher. After 5 1/2 years of applying for the DREAM Act, the individual will be allowed to apply for legal permanent residency and then be able to apply for U.S. citizenship.
According to ADAC, Nazario has camped outside McCain's office conducting the boot camps hoping the senator will allow him to become a soldier by voting for the passage of the DREAM Act, which is expected to come up for a vote as soon as next week.
