Arizona U.S. Senator John McCain says he favors dealing with illegal immigrants already in the country before addressing the issue of immigration reform.
The Arizona Republican, who has long been an advocate for border security and tougher laws on undocumented immigrants, made the comment on Wednesday.
“Once we get the border secured — and we can get the border secured — I would look forward to working on comprehensive immigration reform,” Mr. McCain said.
Mr. McCain, who campaigned against President Obama’s immigration proposals, said he opposes amnesty for illegal immigrants, noting the need to “close the borders” before considering immigration reform policies.
Mr. McCain explained his vote against the DREAM Act, saying the two parties have ” philosophical differences.”
The comments come in the midst of a number of Republican Congressmen offering immigration reform proposals. Iowa Rep. Steve King says he will propose a bill aimed at targeting illegal immigrants and a path towards citizenship
