A example of this is happening right now in California Gay marriage the majority of the people voted against it in California. But now the Gay activist took that to the Supreme court because a state cannot make such laws that are discriminatory in action. Same thing will eventually have to be done with immigration but on this particular issue if California did pass this is would be put on hold and sent to the supreme court.
