Grad school costs can be practically astronomical for someone who is ineligible for scholarships/stipends. I did it for over 2 years in a PhD program in Physics and the costs were approx. 14k a year (tuition+books+fees, and this was a state school with an in-state tuition rate) and this doesn't include living expenses and transportation, and most importantly you have way less free time than when you were an undergrad, which makes is very, very difficult to have a job at the same time.

My family was able to help me a bit in the beginning, but now, with the economy being the way it is and everything else, doing Grad school on your own as an undocumented, without serious luck as far as stipends and scholarships, verges on impossibility.
