Its safe. Its your own money, you just overpaid taxes. My parents got a refund last year and everything was fine.

Are you self employed?
If not, is your employer holding taxes for you?
If your employer is withholding taxes this just means that your employer paid the irs your taxes and the amount exceeded what you really owed in taxes.
