Well if you end up "doomed with him" then don't be afraid to get involved! You're paying him so he has to listen to you, and if you don't like the way he's doing something, SPEAK UP and tell him how you'd prefer it done. Lastly, read and re-read his work and be attentive to details. If I were you I'd ask him to contact me whenever he was done assembling my packet and ready to mail and I'd come over just to review it one last time and make sure I like the way he put everything together and the cover letter and everything else.
