Hmmm that's strange. I got my ID for 6 years but it was stamped "Temporary Visitor, Status Expires (and the expiration date of my EAD." It was technically still valid after the status expired because the ID's expiration was different. (I did have problems using it though, some people are just mean!) Anyway, after my ID expired I got a letter form the DMV saying I can come in and renew only if my documents are up to date.
I also think it depends on who services you. Some people don't note the date of your EAD and don't stamp your card. I know someone who this has happened to. (lucky!)
I guess all states are different.
