I read "Uglies" several years ago. It's a good series. I'm re-reading currently "Chaos Walking" Trilogy by Patrick Ness. I highly recommend it and I was excited to learn Lionsgate bought the movie rights for it, even though I do not think it will be easy to make it into a movie.

There are a couple series books that I've read that falls along the same line, and I would highly recommend to you both. Check out the "Divergent" series by Veronica Roth....really, really, really good IMO, about the same line as Hunger Games, maybe a bit better. And also "Delirium" series by Lauren Oliver.
