I don't know if it's a matter of getting buried under other applications. Hasn't USCIS gone digital now? They're scanning everyone's paperwork into a file management system, so an adjudicator accesses your paperwork/evidence by computer.
They seem to be processing files in order of background checks coming back. Biometrics for some people have just cleared faster than for others.
