Technically,you were a dreamer since a U visa is a legal status but the rules defining AP should be pretty much the same on the specific reasoning you want to travel abroad.

I think you should actually be looking at having an I-192 filed instead since AP is pretty much limited to one use.If you can remove the ground of inadmissability here in the US you should be able to use it as a regular visa to travel abroad and return.
