The week's time will most likely be used for sizing up the Syrian defenses and to gather intelligence like satellites and stuff to pick and choose targets. I think the US air strikes will focus on the Syrian dictator Assad's air forces and artillery to curtail his ability to launch chemical weapons against his own people. Targeting the chemical weapons might be too dangerous since they can escape into urban areas where Assad most likely hid them using human shields.

What's worrying is the Syrian and Iranian response. If they strike back at Israel, that'll draw the Israelis into the conflict as well and the US will have to protect its ally in the region.
