Initial eligibility requirements for Conditional Permanent Resident status
*status is valid for 6 years & can be removed once the applicants successfully completes their degree, apprenticeship, or serves full term of enlistment
•Physical presence in the U.S. on or before Dec. 31, 2011
•15 years or younger
•No age cap
•Good moral character
•Completion of high school diploma or GED (*applicant has one year after graduation to apply for CPR status)
•Be admitted to an institute of higher learning (colleges, universities, technical schools), have begun an apprenticeship in a trade, or enlisted in the military
•While in CPR status, individual is granted a work permit and is eligible to receive Federal Perkins Loans, Ford Direct Loans, and to participate in work study programs.
•Must not be 1) inadmissible on health grounds, 2) not have been convicted of a federal or state law carrying a maximum sentence of a year or more, 3) not have been convicted of 3 or more offenses w/an aggregate imprisonment of 90 days or more
•Provides biometric and biographical data
•Submits to a background check
•Pays all associated fees for the investigation and processing of the application
Eligibility for Removal of Conditional Basis for Permanent Resident Status:
•Acquired a degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential from an institution of higher education
•Or, has completed an apprenticeship in a trade,
•Or has served for a full term of enlistment
Once an individual is granted permanent status, they may apply for naturalization.
*Note: that time in CPR status counts toward time in Legal Permanent Resident or Green Card status, meaning that the time counts toward the 5 years required for citizenship.
