I am waiting for my renewal to be approved so I can send my application. My grandma is having a major surgery in August and will be in bed rest for about two months. I am going to ask for a month in hopes that I get it and can spend the whole month with her.

You will get more than what you ask for. I asked for about 45 days and they actually gave me over 60 days. If you want to stay for a month, you should ask for about 45 days or so and they will actually give you even more days. But it is really up to you to define the dates properly. Give yourself enough time in departing and arriving back. For example, if you plan on leaving on April 1st, you should tell them you're planning on leaving on March 21st or something. Hope you follow what I'm saying.
