Information seems to flow in the path of least resistance. It seems like officers are just throwing around the 6-month timeframe or just reciting what's online, which technically reflect processing times as of May 31, 2016. Perhaps this is done just to get people off their backs. There does not appear to be any significant customer service beyond simply telling people what they already know and what's reflected online.
I actually almost had an argument with a representative about it. It turns out that the date you need to look at is the "last updated." I called because the way I read it was "as of May 31st they were on feb 4 and this information was updated on July 15." So by that logic they would've gotten to my application by now but it turns out that's not how you read the table and I tried to explain this to the representative but she kept telling "ma'am that's not what it means." So we have all been reading the table wrong apparently. Here's what the table is actually telling us according to the representative "on July 15 the last processed application was from feb 4" so everyone with an application days later than feb 4 has to keep waiting
