I have vacationed around Portland and the Gorge area. The people there wasn't friendly with us at all. Just like New Yorkers, they will only talk to you if they need. The Washingtonians are way more friendly, in fact, the friendliest people I have ever met here in US. Everyone who crossed paths with us said hello. There were a few occasions where some food market cashiers offered us to bring our bags to our car. The Washington DL gives 5 years and no mentions of immigration status. You can live in Vancouver,WA. just across the bridge from Portland. It will be cheaper and in WA there is no income tax. If you want to live even better, consider Camas, WA. In 10 to 20 minutes you will be in Portland.
