Yeah you don't really need it. They make you add a bank account + confirm your debit/credit card or add a bank account and enter your ssn.

But again just be careful because if you know Paypal, you know they have a tendency to hold accounts for (almost) no reason whatsoever. And then they ask you to send them ID, give them your ssn, etc. So keep that in mind if you have money in your paypal account (mainly if you have a somewhat large amount of money), and withdraw when possible.
