Being approved for deferred action doesn't grant you legal status, but the EAD that comes with it does (to some extent). An internship is a type of employment. With EAD you are 100% legal to work (except for government-related positions). If the EAD doesn't give you some sort of legal status, you wouldn't be able to get a driver's license out of it.
