Only reason why we need a valid passport is to prove identity and NOTHING ELSE.

Via the Instruction of I-821D:

3. What do documents do you need to provide to prove identity?
Submit any of the following:
- Passport
- Birth Certificate accompanies by photo identification
- Any national identity document from your country of origin bearing your photo and/or fingerprint
- Any US government immigration or other documents bearing your name and photograph (e.g., Employment Authorization Documents, Expired cisas, driver's licenses, non-driver cards, etc)
- Any school-issued form of identification with a photo
- Military identification document with photo
- Any other document that you believe is relevant
