Removal order needs to be terminated or cancel ( even when green card application is approved ), otherwise just like you said it will cause issues when traveling and ICE can still deport you
Still, you can adjust with a final order and getting a Joint MTR afterwards should be relatively easy as you are no longer removeable. Hell court might even do a Sua Sponte. I saw a few where someone adjusted after an exclusion order or got a U-visa and the court agreed to just terminate the proceedings.
