This is the reason why I hounded my mailman, I told him about the letter and the dude got all nervous. Maybe you can try checking the receipt # and check if the status ever updated to include a tracking number... if there's a tracking number there's a chance you could find out if it was returned to USCIS or possible be able to contact USPS and having them drop the mail.

idk maybe I'm just being optimistic, though at the last DHS stakeholder call (Mayorkas?) said applicants can try filing form I-90.
