Here's what you need to collect social security:

1. At least 40 quarters of work.
2. A valid number.
3. Work authorization at some point in life.

The thing that some people will do, after working here for a while, until they decide to just head back to their countries of origin, is to file for asylum, get an EAD after the statutory 150 days pending, then they might actually try to win the case, if they lose they meet the above requirements to collect SS through the consulate in their country of origin.
