The consensus is that there is not right answer, and it is up to the individual to weigh the risks and rewards.


I expired in November of 2018 and applied in January. Initially I thought it was way too early but I ended up loosing out on only 5 months, which I will take in exchange for 1.5 extra years on the back end. By applying early, I also had the benefit of not having the anxiety of 'oh crap, I expire in a few weeks and I haven't been approved!'.
