Parents of Gomez' Brothers Deported To Colombia

(CBS4) MIAMI The family of Juan Gomez, made famous because of their battle to stay in the United States, is scheduled to be deported to their home country Tuesday.

Julio and Liliana Gomez, as well as Juan’s grandmother, will meet Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at Miami International Airport Tuesday prior to their flight to Colombia.

The Gomez's are being deported because they overstayed their visas. In addition, when they first came to the U.S. they brought their two children young children with them.

Juan Gomez and his brother Alex, two Miami Killian Senior High graduates, are still fighting to stay in the U.S. but face deportation following the defeat of the Dream Act in the U.S. Senate.

Known as ''the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act,'' the bill would have allowed children of illegal immigrants who grew up in the United States the opportunity to apply for citizenship if they graduate from high school and attend two years of college or serve in the military.

The Gomez brothers made headlines due to their deportation battle and the support they got from high school classmates.

Juan and Alex Gomez are not being deported at this time because they were given a reprieve when Senator Chris Dodd, a Connecticut Democrat who is running for president, filed a private bill in September that allows them to stay in the U.S. until 2009.
