Sorry you're going through that! I tried to volunteer at Flushing hospital last summer and hit a wall when they wanted me to prove I was here legally. This year I decided not to volunteer and to get a second job in order to save up money and send myself on a vacay.

If this is just for the summer, I would just avoid the HR person until your time is up.
