Where in CA are you? I was in the John Wayne (irvine) airport recently and saw someone go through with a passport. The lady had it opened to the ID part before she checked in, showed it, her identity was verified and she moved on. They did not check anything else. It was quick and to the point. However the passport was colored red and the lady who held it seemed Caucasian. So that might have had something to do.
