Am EWI married to a US Citizen for 8yrs and I was told by 3 different lawyers that adjusting my status was a gamble and could be barred for 10 years or forever.
In order to adjust status, one of the main requirements is that you were inspected into the country. You dont have to be currently legal, but you must have been inspected into the country.

Now, if you EWI you can still fix your status through marriage but you have go to a consulate in your home country to complete the process. Unfortunately, if you have been in the country illegally for more than a year, you'll trigger the 10 ban. In order to avoid this, you can request a waiver so you can step out and come back in. It is a much longer and painful process.
