I've been hearing from several sources that some people don't have to pay taxes (or pay only 10%) if they make under a certain bracket.

I just got a part time job that pays $8.75 an hour and it looks like I'll only be getting around 12-15 hours a week, so I would be making about 5k gross in a year. Does anyone know how much taxes (if any) I'll have to pay on it? And please, only respond if you've filed taxes before and know how it works, I'd really like a concrete answer here.

Also, what happens if you take 2 part time jobs? Does the government combine the income and tax it as one unit, or tax both separately?

They already take the taxes out your paycheck, you'll get money back sometimes at the end of the year

Filing taxes depends on 3 criteria: income, age, and filing status. Here's the threshold for filing a federal income tax return for those under 65:

Single: $9,500
Head of household: $12,200
Married, filing jointly: $19,000
Married, filing separately: $3,700
Qualifying widow(er) w/ dependent child: $15,300

Please keep in mind that your state may require you to file taxes regardless of your income.

For multiple jobs, you will receive multiple W-2s. But as far as filing in concerned, it's just considered the same income and applies to the same thresholds.

What would be my status though? My parents obviously aren't citizens or permanent legal residents (we're all visa overstays), so should I file as single because I obviously can't be claimed as a dependent since they don't pay taxes?

File as single if your gross income is at least $9,500. Otherwise, you don't need to file a federal return. What state do you live in?

NB: These are 2011 thresholds. These levels are annually adjusted for inflation, so it may even be a bit more this year.

None of us could tell you how much you'd have to pay exactly. By the looks of it if this was the only job you held the entire year and the only income you received then no you won't owe taxes. Also make sure your employer treats you as an employee for tax purposes because I've seen cases were people are employees yet their employers hand them out 1099 misc instead of a W2.

Do your parents file taxes? It doesn't matter if they are undocumented as well they can file taxes. They would need to apply for an ITIN though. I strongly recommend it because it's considered "good moral character" by USCIS.

Another question, will you be supporting yourself? To me it seems like 5,000 is nothing...

Also, just letting you know if you do file you would file as single by what you've told me since it seems you have no children, or other people you support and it also seems like you're not married.

Now if your parents decide to file taxes and they provide over half of your support ( meaning pay rent, clothing, food, utilities, etc) then they could claim you as a dependent.

Btw did you just get hired? Because if you did don't expect a large refund...lol

If you had federal income tax withheld you can file a tax return regardless of what you made. That way you can get some money back

This is so incredibly wrong. Please do not pay attention to this.
