Quote:
Eun Sook Lee of the National Korean American Service & Educational Consortium in Los Angeles said she raised concerns about the continuing deportations of young people who could be eligible for legalization if Congress passed the so-called Dream Act granting that right to those bound for college or the military. White House officials said they would look into the issue, she said.
Quote:
And although the White House maintains that a comprehensive reform bill could be introduced this fall and possibly passed next year, top officials have told Latino leaders privately that it could take as long as two to four years, according to Antonio Gonzalez, president of the William C. Velasquez Institute, a national Latino policy and research organization in Los Angeles
.

Quote:
A position quietly gaining momentum, particularly among members of Congress, is to push early passage of a smaller bill, such as legalizing younger immigrants bound for college, as a "down payment" on reform, Gonzalez said.

"That logic is becoming more and more appealing," Gonzalez said. "People are going to get real nervous about going into an election cycle with nothing to show for immigration reform."

I think we need to come with a plan to bombard the White House with phone calls supporting the passage of the dream act this fall.

Ummmm, like, AWESOME????

Such encouragement after a rough day is just what I needed! I really hope DREAM gains the traction it needs. I'll be ready to call when it reached critical mass.

Yikes at the 2 to 4 years comment, but I've always thought major immigration reform is something left to the second term of a president. History has also.

I think they are looking at all the options at this point.

Atleast pass the DREAM Act standalone if not CIR at this point.

Most of the posters here are currently students or just young people out of status, who are not currently *producing* yet for this country, or paying federal taxes, or supporting families, etc.

So to say that we have it very 'rough' is an overstatement. Yes, it is depressing that you cannot drive to places, travel, or go abroad on vacation. There are millions of others who are just as young and have been working very hard for years, in some cases raising their own families, or supporting their parents, etc, who were also brought over here at a young age.

Those of us who have been fortunate and LUCKY enough to obtain some kind of upper education, should be thankful for having this opportunity regardless of status. What you learn, no one can take away.

Thank God for freedom of speech, but I find a lot of the comments on this site quite selfish.

There is pending legislation introduced on June,4th by Representative Mike Honda (D) from California called the "Reuniting Families Act" so that immediate relatives of permament residents can gain status within the same timeline that immediate relatives of US ciitizens (Currently 6 to 8 months on average).

I think this works in a similar way to the i245 rule that expired in 2002. Personally, I believe that i245 should be renewed as it allows permament residents to petition for out of status relatives without requiring the undocumented person to leave the country. My point is that it looks as if there will be an attempt to do more than one piecemeal legislation this fall.

Hopefully.

IMO i think they should do more to re-unite people who have already been separated and make it easier for them to come back, rather than wait 10 years to re-unite. I think its selfish that the green card holders want to speed up the process of bringing in family members the same way American Citizens do. Its not even that long, about 2 years. Permanent residents are still able to be deported for certain crimes, that's why it takes longer to bring in family members if you only have a green-card.

But no one cares about the students or mothers and fathers that have already been separated. They should focus more on them first, rather than giving cards to people who marry for only papers.

I think people who commit marriage fraud are scum. Many in my family, including myself are in this predicament because we naively thought we could legalize our situation based on our OWN merit. Yeah, right. I think the govermnent should really look at taking into consideration wether someon has a genuine interest in becoming part of America, and wether that person will be productive for many years to come.

Family reunifiication, productivity, and loyalty to this country should be the criteria used to grant legal status.

I have several family members who are U.S. born citizens, as well as naturalized citizens who couldn't care less and have no interest in living here. Go figure.

Agreed. We need at least a week of calls/faxes/emails.
