Is the total cost typically less if you're an overstay instead of EWI?

i just recently got engaged to my longtime boyfriend (yay!) and we consulted with a lawyer regarding adjusting my status. since i was an EWI and 245i beneficiary, i needed to pay an extra $1000 fine. the lawyer quoted us a total of $5500. is this the average cost for a lawyer?

i'm aware that i shouldn't gamble my future just so that i can save some money. i simply would like to know how much it usually cost.

thanks for those who reply!

sorry i just read this, if u are a 245i beneficiary then i think it's a good price, lucky u !!! i ewi and will have to go back to adjust !!!

Like I said, for my bros, it was

1,500 for the process.
1,000 for the fine.
1,010 for work permit and all that.

Prices for the work permit did go up a few dollars but Im not what they are.

The cost depends on the lawyer. You can find lawyers that will charge $3,000, while some will charge over $5,000.

If you're eligible to adjust in the country, then I wouldn't anything more than $4,000-$5,000. If I'd been able to adjust without leaving the US, I wouldn't have hired a lawyer at all since my case was had no complications.

Since I had to leave the US to apply for residency and my husband was being deployed at the time, we decided to hire a lawyer to help us with putting the waiver together. We paid our lawyer $4,000 total, not including USCIS fees and travel costs.

Ari, I would not pay $8,000. That is insane!! That is something someone with a criminal record or other aggravating factors would need to pay. Even if you have to go through the consular process abroad, that is just too much. Add $300-$400 for the I-130, $500 or so for NVC, the 601 waiver fee of around $500, $200-$300 for the medical, and then plane tickets, plus the cost of food and the hotel stay in Ciudad Juarez, you're paying over $15,000!

And yes, the fees for someone that EWI are much higher than for someone who is an overstay.
