Dreamers want to study, work, and travel. This bill only addresses two of those.

Previous iterations of the DREAM Act granted eligible students with a 5-year Conditional Permanent Residency. The current Senate bill grants us a 5-year Registered Provisional Immigrant status.

The difference?

Conditional Permanent Residency would have allowed a student to be eligible for state financial aid (remember that not all states give aid to undocumented students) and some federal financial aid. In the last DREAM Act, the federal financial aid was limited to Federal Work-Study, William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan program, and Federal Perkins Loans--no federal grants but it was at least something.

In this current bill, RPI status grants no federal financial aid whatsoever, not even loans. You are left to your own devices for 5 years.

What this means is that Dreamers under this bill who cannot afford college or grad/law/medical school on their own (and need federal financial aid) have to put their educational life on hold for 5 more years.

We should push to be granted Conditional Permanent Residency instead of RPI for the interim 5 years.

first of all, professors do not know much about medical school admissions. People without greencard and citizenship do get accepted if they have the grades and money to pay for 4 year worth of school. but mostly if someone is illegal, they do not have 200k in the bank to show to the school and that will be the reason for the rejection. But honestly speaking, I am not sure how many people here are even academically prepared to even apply for medical school. do not think about your status first, get your MCAT and GPA grades first and worry about them later.

I agree, DONT PUSH it. We are lucky to be able to live here, work here, and also TRAVEL with the RPI. Don't push for more, I feel blessed just to know that I can (hopefully) get on a plane, see my family, and to come back. Try getting a loan out from the bank or something for your college and pay it off later. I go to a community college, and I pay about 500$ per one class, I do get in-state tuition though, I was eligible for a FREE scholarship for 2 years, but I couldn't apply for it before, but I learned to deal with it. It is what it is. I just hope this passes as soon as possible. like someone said before "take it or leave it"

I am happy with the current bill.

OP: The bill is fine. Having a job and applying for scholarships lessen the tuition blow.

being a doctor is not the best way to be successful. it requires great deal of studying and very acute sense in science and math. Myself was a premed in college with straight As and 39 on the MCAT but wasnt able to continue my education due to bad economy and my status. I am working at a hospital for 5 years now and I've learned the doctors are not the ones that makes the most money. it is the owner of the hospital, administrators and top heads at a billing company are the top paying profession here. It felt like my life is over when I was not able to go back to school to finish medicine but there is much bigger world out there. Open your eyes wide and be very positive. If you are meant to be a doctor, you will be one. Just make yourself prepared when you are given a chance. We are underprevilaged due to our status but that makes us stronger in the long run. just dont give up.
