For Dreamers:
Plan for a pathway to citizenship
The legislation goes further than the last effort in 2013 by cutting the time to acquire citizenship to eight years instead of 13, according to an administration official.
First, individuals would be in a temporary status for five years, with three years until they get citizenship, amounting to an eight-year path.
There's an exception for undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children, who fall under a form of humanitarian relief known as Temporary Protected Status or who are farmworkers. Those individuals can go directly to green cards if they meet requirements, including passing background checks.
To be eligible for the bill's legalization plan, immigrants must have been in the country before January 1, 2021.

what's "temporary status"? Because here, they're making it sound like it's not permanent residency, which is bullshit.

Neverminded, the excerpt is garbage. TPS and DACA under same expedited period, temp status for the rest of undocumented; basically CIR

Establish an 8-year path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. by Jan. 1
Provide an expedited path to citizenship for farm workers and undocumented young people who arrived in the U.S. as children with temporary protected status under DACA
Replace the word “alien” with “non-citizen” in law
Raise the per-country caps on family and employment-based legal immigration numbers
Repeal the penalty that prohibits undocumented immigrants who leave the country from returning to the U.S. for between three to ten years
Expand transnational anti-drug task forces in Central America
Increase funding for technology at the southern border
The path to citizenship would give undocumented immigrants five years of provisional status, after which they can apply for a green card. Three years later, they can apply for citizenship.

DACA-protected undocumented immigrants and farm workers who can provide work history can skip the five years of provisional status and “go directly to a green card,” a senior administration official said on the call.

Lead sponsors Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and

The temp status is essentially daca for others.. meaning deportation protection and EADs. For this bill to pass, it would take a massive shift from the current political climate and I don't know how that can happen.

I think this bill is mostly symbolic, telling everyone the administration's stance on immigration. Immigration advocates will be happy about it since it's something that they can fundraise off of but a path forward where this bill becomes law is hard to find.

I just hope something can break congress's deadlock.

“But White House officials were having trouble Wednesday convincing advocates and even reporters that it could garner the support of at least 10 Republicans in the Senate. Behind the scenes, the White House has accepted that it will need to break the bill up into pieces. It endorsed a plan to back separate bills for Dreamers, those with Temporary Protected Status and essential workers on a call with advocates Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the call.

A massive deal on Dreamers is imminent. They need to break this bill up and go for Dreamer legalization first or cut some sort of compromise!

The way this bill stands, it has no chance of getting even half republican vote. In fact close to 5-6 DINOs (ex. Synema, Manchin, Tester etc) are sure Nos. Hopefully they will be open to compromise.

Yeah, let's move away from the mass amnesty bill that would legalize adult illegal immigrants faster than what legal immigrants are subjected to (family sponsorships waiting in line for decades for their number to be called up)

The White House sure knows CIR ain't happening.

It's all political theater to show the Left and Liberals that they tried.

So they will settle for DACA fix + whatever they can cobble together to get to 60 votes.

I really hate to say this but what you said is a strong possibility of what is going on, although I hope you're wrong and that they do have a strong intention of doing something and actually getting it passed this time. Only time will tell. UWD will find even this to be bad. They want "immediate citizenship" for all, even criminals.

The GOP will want to limit the number of people with legal status as possible. They are assuming that the mass majority of people who get a gc and eventually citizenship will votes democratic, so why help your rivals. That increase in voting power may be enough to help turn certain states like TX and AZ blue, and they absolutely do not want that. That is why they push for cuts to legal immigration as a part of any deal.

I am hoping this changes but from the articles I have read over the years, the GOP may only consider legal status for the current population of people who have daca, 700k or so.
